The nominees for the 79th Annual Academy Awards were announced this week by Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Sid Ganis, and past Oscar nominee Salma Hayek, in the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater.
Latin America was there, mostly trough "Pan's Labyrinth" (El Laberinto del Fauno), a Mexico/Spain/USA production, written and directed by Guillermo del Toro.

The movie got six nominations:
1. Best foreign language film of the year: "Pan's Labyrinth"
2. Original screenplay: "Pan's Labyrinth" by Guillermo del Toro
3. Achievement in makeup: "Pan's Labyrinth" David Marti and Montse Ribe
4. Achievement in music written for motion pictures (Original score): "Pan's Labyrinth" - Javier Navarrete
5. Achievement in cinematography: "Pan's Labyrinth" - Guillermo Navarro

NAIF

This is "NAIF," my friend's "indie/down-tempo/trip-hop" band. Her name is Constanza Camelo and she is wearing a wig in this video. Check it out! The song's name is "ENTONCES."



The guitarrist of the band is Verner Duarte, her boyfriend. They both live in Bogotá, Colombia. They are currently working on their first album. For more info, you can also check: www.myspace.com/naifproject. Website is under construction.

CERATI

Gustavo Cerati (born in Buenos Aires on August 11, 1959) is an Argentinian artist and songwriter. During the 1980s and 90s he was a member of the Argentinian Rock en Español group Soda Stereo along with Charly Alberti and Zeta Bosio. In the early 90s, with Amor Amarillo, he pursued a solo career. Many have described his music as Electro-Rock.

Cerati is known for his lead and rhythm guitar talents and for his ability to play intricate lead solos on guitar while singing in key. He released his latest album, Ahí Vamos in April 2006, in which his guitar playing is featured prominently as opposed to the heavy use of electronic samplers as in Bocanada. Ahí Vamos was certified platinum in Argentina in only one day.

Despite stating that the Grammys do not matter to him, he attended the Latin Grammys ceremony on November 2, 2006 where he won for Best Rock Album and Best Rock Song.

ATERCIOPELADOS

One of the first Latin rock bands in Colombia, Aterciopelados is among the Latin American country's top groups. The recipients of Grammy award nominations in 1997 and 1998, the band has fused its own sound by combining a rock-solid approach with a variety of Latin American musical traditions including mariachi, bolero, tropical and flamenco.

Aterciopelados, whose name translates as "the Velvety Ones," was formed by former members of Delia y Los Aminoácidos -- Andrea Echeverri, who plays acoustic guitar and sings lead, and Héctor Buitrago, who plays bass guitar. The original drummer Andrés Giraldo was replaced by Alejandro Duque in 1995 and the original guitar player Charlie Márquez was replaced by Alejandro Gómez Cáceres in 1997. Among Echeverri's contributions is singing backup vocals, by Gustavo Cerati's request, on "En la Ciudad de la Furia" for Soda Stereo's MTV Unplugged album Comfort y Música Para Volar.

Echeverri released a self-titled solo album in 2004. Buitrago released a solo album titled CONECTOR in the spring of 2006, featuring vocals by Andrea Echeverri, Julieta Venegas and others.
